Overview
3DS Rainbow Road, also known more formally as 3DS Rainbow Road: Solar Edition, was re-made entirely using 3ds Max's modelling tools, and was constructed by simple estimations of distance from the original version. The track features not-to-scale versions of the planets Venus, Earth, Mars, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, most of which replace the simple asteroids used in the original version, but some asteroids were kept. The Earth in the background slowly rises during the race, and the skybox was taken from Wii Rainbow Road but was modified to slowly rotate. This track also has textures from Wii Rainbow Road, most notably in the road. The bouncy mushrooms are re-textured into chocolate-chip cookies.
Section 1
Three Star Portals are added at the first turn. The first two ramps are straight rather at an angle like in the original. The wavy part which ends Section 1 is replaced with a large ramp with boost panels on it and another Star Portal is found at the peak of the ramp, but in bluish color.
Section 2
First glider section is replaced by a "cookie" in the middle. After the rings of Saturn, the glider ramp has a short ramp-way added in the middle to make the jump easier. Transition to the Moon: Small ramp-ways were added, but the ramp-ways are very separated from each other, making it challenging to land on one. Chain Chomps return as obstacles, but they are taken from battle stage Chain Chomp Wheel. Volcano balls from Grumble Volcano are added as an obstacle on the moon, but the fire is recolored purple.
Section 3
The moving conveyor belts before the tunnel are replaced with water streams. The track has one element that has never been seen before in a custom track, which is moving terrain for the spinning tunnel. Getting it to work was quite difficult and required perfect placement of the model because moving terrain is hard-coded and pretty much only works as pointing in one direction (unlike water streams). This is the cause of the water streams before the tunnel. The last Star Portal is found at the beginning of the tunnel, but is animated and spinning clockwise, unlike the other Star Portals in the track.
References
The track contains three references to other games and three references to people on the Internet. Between Saturn and the road that follows is a floating island made up of blocks, on which BigOto2, Kurtjmac, and Lorgon111 stand together, referencing to Minecraft (all which the 3 people played). The windows on the rockets at the end of the Section 2 have Kerbal people sitting inside, which is a reference to the game Kerbal Space Program. Near the same location is a "start-gate"-like frame (that is animated like the actual start gate) with the word "SPAAAAAAAAAAACE" on it, which subtly references the ending of Portal 2 and the Internet memes that followed.
When the track is run with the lap count modifier code, races will only last two laps, which equates to approximately four and a half minutes. It is otherwise a full 3-lap track, which is too long for online play.
