Needed Information

When releasing a custom track, the following should be prepared in advance.

 • A valid name, author and version number for the track.
 • A list of editors used to make the track.
 • Images or videos of the custom track.
 • A working download link that is accessible by anyone.

Creating the Article

A custom track article consists of seven main aspects. All will be listed in order that they appear.

Misc-Info Template

The general structure of this template is as follows:

Version: v1.1
Date of latest version: 2023-08-14
Editors used: Blender, CTools, Lorenzi's KMP Editor, RiiStudio, Wiimms SZS Tools
WBZ files: ct.wiimm.de
Download:
 • The name parameter is almost always PAGENAME. This will display the article's title in the template. If the DISPLAYTITLE template is used, it is equal to the parameter used there. If the custom track is a remake or has the same name of an already existing article, parenthesis are present in the title. In this case, the parameter should be set to PAGENAME.
 • The author parameter displays the author(s). If a person has a user page, link to them by adding two square brackets ([[]]) around their name.
 • The version parameter displays the latest main version number. Simply enter it here.
 • The date of release parameter displays the latest date of release. Alternative versions do not count for this criterium. Enter it here in YYYY-MM-DD format.
 • The editors used parameter lists the editors used to make the custom track. This list is alphabetically ordered. Most software to make custom tracks have articles on this Wiiki, so they can be linked to. If there is an editor that cannot be linked to, link to their website instead. For example, Paint.NET is linked to like this: Paint.NET.
 • The wbz-id parameter is the ID of the custom track on Wiimm's Custom Archive. When releasing a custom track, this ID will not exist yet. After the ID gets created, moderators will add it.
 • The download parameter contains the download link. If an alternative version is made from the last official version, it is added in this template by adding more parameters named download 2, download 3, etc. Download links must be accessible by anyone.

Overview

The standard first sentence of a custom track article is:

Snowy Ridge is a custom track created by Carl.

After this sentence, more information about the track can be written in third person.

Media

If no media of the custom track exists, the nomedia template is added like so:

nomedia

When a video of the custom track exists, it is added like this:

All attributes of the template are separated with a pipe symbol.

 • The first attribute signifies the video type. The youtube-box is the only video type that is supported.
 • The second attribute is always left empty.
 • The third attribute contains the ID of the video.
 • The fourth attribute contains information about what is being showcased. It includes the version number, if the video is a "Showcase" or "VS Race" and indicates if the video was recorded with Dolphin.
 • The fifth and last attributes are the amount of seconds into the video when the video should start and stop. The starting point is the first second the custom track is shown on screen and the ending point is when it disappears.

Adding images is also possible. This is done below the video. A single one is added like this:

All attributes are again separated with a pipe symbol.

 • The first attribute is the name of the file.
 • The second attribute is how big the file will be displayed in pixels. A size of 400 is recommended.
 • The third attribute will encase the image in a white box.
 • The fourth attribute is the alignment attribute. Since this image is always aligned to the left, the standard value is none.
 • The last attribute is the description of the image. Most of the time, it is A preview of the track.

Adding multiple images is done by using the <gallery> environment:

<gallery>
The Snowfall Ridge at the E_d of _he Wor__ERROR_404 v1.0 In-Game Preview (Cave Section).png|A preview of the cave (v1.0)
The Snowfall Ridge at the E_d of _he Wor__ERROR_404 v1.1 In-Game Preview (Forest Section).png|A preview of the forest (v1.1)
</gallery>

More images can be added by appending them inside the same environment.

Version History

The version history contains the changelog of each version of the custom track. If there is only one release, it would look like this:

Version
Date of release
Information
v1.0
2023-08-08
First release

Note that download links of separate versions are only added if there are multiple of them. Adding updates to this table is done like so:

Version
Date of release
Information

When a changelog is only one item, a bullet point is not needed (as seen with v1.0.1), except when another user made the update. When two or more items are present, bullet points are added (as seen with v1.1).

Custom Track Distributions

This section contains information about which version of the track is included in a distribution. When it is not included in anything, it looks like this:

This track is part of the following Custom Track Distributions:
* (none)

There are two ways to enter information in this section. Note that this list is always sorted alphabetically.

* Gertie's CT Collection (v1.1.gctc)
* MKW Unlimited

The first bullet point contains a list to the distribution together with the custom track's version number in parenthesis. The last bullet point is a template with three variables.

 • The first variable is the name of the distribution. This will link to the corresponding article.
 • The second variable is the family number that the custom track is in on Wiimm's Custom Archive. This number is assigned when it is entered into the archive.
 • The last variable is the distribution ID also on Wiimm's Custom Archive. This is only available if a distribution file has been submitted and processed in the archive. More information on how to do so can be found here.

Names in Other Languages

This section lists the translations of the custom track into other languages by use of the following template:

If an alternative name is added from the Naming section or in general, two or more templates are added like so:

The Snowfall Ridge at the E_d of _he Wor__ERROR_404
The Snowfall Ridge ERROR_404
Here, the template that does not match the article's title will get an extra variable en-name that allows various scripts to separate the translations.

User Link and Categories

The bottom of the article contains the author's user link and the needed categories. Usually, only the category Track/Custom is needed.

Overview
The Snowfall Ridge at the E_d of _he Wor__ERROR_404 is a custom track created by Carl.

Naming
Mario Kart Wii only displays the first 41 characters for a track name. This means that this track's name is too long, as it is 51 characters; especially if the name of the author is appended to the track name. Due to the length, it is recommended to use the name The Snowfall Ridge ERROR_404 for distributions.

Slot Information
It is recommended to put this track on slot 2.3 because of the 0x2ef. If this is used in a distribution with the ability to change music slots, it is recommended to use music slot 8.4.

Credits
* Julia, for fixing a KMP issue.

Conditional Sections

DEFAULTSORT Template

The DEFAULTSORT template is a template that sorts the custom track on something different than its name. It is used when the custom track name starts with a prefix (such as SNES), "A" or "The". For example, a custom track named "The Beginning of The End" would have the template like this:

DISPLAYTITLE Template

The DISPLAYTITLE template is a template that can alter the article's title in a slight way. It is mostly used for decapitalizing the first letter and adding underscores in titles. For example, a custom track named "The Snowfall Ridge at the E_d of _he Wor__ERROR_404" would be located at "The Snowfall Ridge at the E d of he Wor ERROR 404". To fix the title, the template would be added like this:

If this template is used, the name variable in the Misc-Info template should be set to the value used here.

About Template

The about template is a template that tells the reader about other articles closely related to the custom track's name. For example, if the name is "The Snowfall Ridge at the E_d of _he Wor__ERROR_404" and there already exists an article called "Snowfall Ridge", the template should be used like this:

Syntax Display
Not to be confused with Snowfall Ridge, another custom track with a similar name.

This should then also be added to the other article, linking to the custom track being released.

Overview

Naming

If the custom track name is more than 41 characters long, an alternative name should be provided. The following text should be added:

Mario Kart Wii only displays the first 41 characters for a track name. This means that this track's name is too long, as it is 51 characters; especially if the name of the author is appended to the track name. Due to the length, it is recommended to use the name The Snowfall Ridge ERROR_404 for distributions.

The alternative name should get an entry in the Names in Other Languages section.

Slot Information

If the custom track has recommended slot information, the following should be added:

It is recommended to put this track on slot 2.3 because of the 0x2ef. If this is used in a distribution with the ability to change music slots, it is recommended to use music slot 8.4.

The slot numbers of the original tracks can be found here. If the music slot is the same as the track slot, the last sentence can be removed.

Credits

The credits are a section dedicated to users that made a small contribution to the custom track in any way, be it fixing a problem or giving feedback to the author. Format it as follows:

* Julia, for fixing a KMP issue.

More users can be added by adding extra bullet points.

Trivia

Trivia are more obscure facts that do not fit the main overview of the article. Multiple entries are split by bullet points, but a single one is just added without one.

* This custom track was made in less than 60 minutes.
* This custom track was made on a Monday.

Updating the Lists

Only the List of Custom Tracks article has to be updated when a custom track is released or updated. An entry in the table will look like this:

data-sort-value="Snowfall Ridge at the E_d of _he Wor__ERROR_404 , The"| The Snowfall Ridge at the E_d of _he Wor__ERROR_404 || Carl || 2023-08-08 || 2023-08-14

The data-sort-value is the same as the DEFAULTSORT template. The title and author are added afterwards. Then, the first and latest release dates are appended in YYYY-MM-DD format.

Submitting to the News

After all this has been done, the release has to be put on the news. This is done by adding it to the news template. Instructions on how to do so can be found there. After moderators have verified the release, it will be put on the main news template.

Updating the User Link

The custom track would be added on the user link underneath the "Custom Tracks" section like so:
