In early 2007, a Youtube user named "RekcahRepyh", introduced the first Mario Kart 64, called "Starlight". This early version used Graphics from Rainbow Road, rather than it's own.

Later on, RekcahRepyh released a new version with custom graphics, and explained how he had edited it completely with Hex.

Mario Kart 64 rendered its levels using 3D models, while using sprites for characters, powerups and weapons, such as shells. It was the first game in the series to feature blue spiny shells, and introduced mini-turbos from power slides. It was also the first in the series to offer 4-player split-screen play.

Custom Tracks for Mario Kart 64

Only one Custom Track for Mario Kart 64 is known. It is called "Starlight" and replaces Rainbow Road. It was created by rekcaHrepyH and was shown in various stages of development in videos posted during 2007 and 2008.
