Welcome to the Custom Mario Kart Wiiki!

Wiiki.png

Thank you for joining the Custom Mario Kart Wiiki!

Before you get started, click here to read the Rules page.

Keep the following in mind as you contribute to the site:

  • Make good edits. Always use the SHOW PREVIEW button to check your changes before you use the SAVE button. If you make a mistake, wait 15 minutes before saving the same page a third or fourth time in a row.
  • Saving lots of edits without PREVIEWING will get the moderators on your case, and can get you banned from the Wiiki.
  • If you plan to update a lot of pages in a short period of time, please clear it with a moderator first.
  • Write articles in third person (using words like he, she and they) instead of first person (I, me and we.) User pages and talk pages are the exceptions to this rule.
  • Use correct grammar, spelling and capitalization.
  • If someone posts on your talk page, please post a reply.
  • Sign all of your posts on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). This will turn into your name and the time you wrote the comment.
  • Don't delete anything from your talk page.
  • Use the Templates on the Main Page when making new articles for content such as Custom Tracks, Texture Hacks, Characters and other releases.
  • We encourage all content makers to create a User Link to put on their release pages and to add it to the Author List.

Thank you! --KantoEpic (talk) 21:45, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks

I need help with starting the distribution. GuidedByVoices (talk) 14:16, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Sure, here's the steps you need to start with.

1) Choosing tracks:

Most distributions have 32 tracks. Ideally you will want to choose tracks that have a common theme and ones that aren't in popular distributions (CTGP) othewise people will just play those ones if they have the same tracks instead. Download all the tracks. You will need to edit the wiki pages to say that the track is used in your distribition.

2) Choose the type:

You can either use the CTGP My Stuff folder or Riivolution. If you are a beginner then I would recommend CTGP as its much easier

  • CTGP My Stuff: To use My Stuff you would make a link to a folder with all the track SZS files you collected in step one. People would then download the folder and place the SZS files in their my stuff folder to run your distro. Here's a good example of a My Stuff distro.
  • Riivolution: Watch this video and follow the links in the youtube video description to download the template and files you need. replace the term "your mod" with all the track SZS files you collected in step one.
Riivolution game patching tutorial

Riivolution is harder than My Stuff but it is far more flexible and allows you to patch files such as Common.szs for more advanced mods such as stat/item edits. Here's a good example of a Riivolution distro.

3) Creating the wiki page:

Read this to setup and create the distribution page. If you need any more help please tell me.

PS: I would highly suggest making a User Link for yourself. It will make it easier for people to find your creations. --HackerCop (talk) 15:14, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

It still looks hard and confusing. If you want to edit my tracks click the link on my userpage. GuidedByVoices (talk) 17:30, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
If you want, you could give me a list of the tracks and I could compile it into a distribution for you. --HackerCop (talk) 18:02, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
I don't have a list of tracks. GuidedByVoices (talk) 19:03, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok, well when you have chosen which tracks you want to put in your distribution, name them here and I'll compile it into a distribution for you. You will need to chose 32 tracks. --HackerCop (talk) 12:04, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Blender help

Hey! I figured just to start I'd get some questions just out of the way.

First, which version of Blender do you use, and do you have any plugins for it? (I'm guessing something like UV Squares?)

Next, what other software do you use? I have BrawlBox, but I'm not sure if you need another version.

Lastly, how much experience in Blender do you think is needed to make a custom track? I know my way around a bit, but definitely have a ways to go.

I'll definitely come up with more questions in the future, I just figured this is a good starting point. Thank you so much again for doing this! Whipinsnapper (talk) 17:46, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

I'm on blender v2.82 though I may need to update, just get the latest version. In terms of plugins I haven't added any yet as blender is so powerful itself though I will probably install some in the future. I've just made a custom battle arena in blender (no plugins) and will probably release it today or on Monday.

Software

Here are the essential programs you'll need to get you started:

All of these programs are free and most are open source

I would actually recommend you get BrawlCrate instead of BrawlBox as it's more modern and being updated and developed, has more features and is very similar to BrawlBox (it's based of Brawlbox's source code). Usage is virtually the same as BrawlBox, when you run it you won't notice any difference! Basically it's better.

You also asked about how much blender experience you need. The amount of experience you need really depends on how good you want your tracks to be but I would recommend getting to the level of being able to model a basic hammer etc before you start as your skills will really show up in your tracks. If you feel that your blender skills are poor try watching and following these youtube tutorials as they would massively help improve your modelling skills. Hope that answered your questions and if you have any more don't hesitate to ask. --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 18:49, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

Great! So when I start modeling, do I need to set anything up, like scaling or anything? And should I use a cube or a plane? Whipinsnapper (talk) 17:08, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
Good question. The main thing you need to know is that the game units are huge so a typical road will be between 2km and 4km in diameter (seriously) so you will need to change the scaling. To do this press n which will open up a tab on the right, click on view and change the clip start to 10m and end to 1,000,000m. This will prevent clipping (model disappering from view) when you zoom too far in our out. I would also recommend going to edit>>preferences>>keymap and changing the spacebar action from play to tools so that when you hit the spacebar it will open up a object context menu. As for your last question I would just delete everything in view (press a to select all and hit del) and then press shift+a and select mesh>>plane to start off with a square.

May I ask how good your blender skills are so I can help you better? Have you done 3D modelling in it before or are you just starting out. --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 21:23, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

My Blender skills are alright! Modeling won't be much of an issue, I know the basics and have modeled some basic stuff. I'm mostly going to struggle with textures, like I know next to nothing about materials, nodes, and UV mapping. I'm sure it won't be much of an issue with a helping hand though. Whipinsnapper (talk) 00:01, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
Don't worry about textures I can help. Here's UV mapping in a nutshell --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 07:45, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

UV mapping demostrated with chocolates.jpg

Hey, it's been a while! I know you're on vacation right now, so no rush getting back to this. After I have modelled my track, what are the important steps to take? I'm mostly concerned about how I should export the model for BrawlCrate and the actual model, and the differences for the KMP. Whipinsnapper (talk) 01:40, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
Exporting for BrawlCrate/BrawlBox is slightly complex because BrawlCrate wants .dae files in the Autodesk 3ds max format meaning that if you just export a .dae from blender it will crash BrawlCrate. The fix is to use the free Autodesk FBX converter which will create a .dae sutiable for BrawlCrate. To export in blender make sure all your objects are merged into one by going into object mode, selecting all objects and pressing Ctrl+j. Your Scene Collection should look like this and your textures should also all be PNGs.

Blender scene collection before export.jpg

Next go to File >> Export >> FBX and export your model using these settings.

Blender fbx settings for export.jpg

Drag and drop your fbx into the converter, change the destination format to DAE Collada and click convert.

Autodesk FBX converter settings.jpg

You should now be able to import your .dae into BrawlCrate

To export an OBJ for the KCL go to file >> export >> Wavefront (.obj) and use these settings.

Blender export obj.jpg

You can use this model in your kmp editor as well.

Help With Animations

Hello, I noticed that you were having trouble getting animations to work for Rugged Island. I just wanted to reach out to see if you needed any help doing them, as I have recently learned animations myself. If you needed me to update the track I’d be more than happy to. —👍 DryBowser (talk) 22:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

That would be fantastic Man-O-Wii, I would love to learn how to add (texture) animations. I'm going to release v1.2 of Rugged Island on monday so if you could update that for me I would be very grateful. Basically I was having problems getting my water animation to work (like in daisy circuit or yoshi falls) I can use the water splash effect (pocha) without any problems but I would really like to learn how to import animation from other tracks or even make my own! I was struggling with this tutorial as there is no audio, it's confusing and I believe it's excessively long. If you could teach me that would be great and thank you so much for your offer. --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 11:03, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, no problem! If it helps, I actually found the wiiki's written tutorial to be quite easy to follow. I struggled with animations at first, but once you get them working once it's extremely easy to get them to keep working. --👍 DryBowser (talk) 18:35, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
In that case I'll try the wiiki tutorial then and if I'm still struggling then I'll ask you for help. How does that sound. --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 07:39, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Whatever's best. Just a word of advice, double check to ensure you've done all the animations right after you're done. There's some things that are easy to forget, so it's honestly better to check before you test the track. --👍 DryBowser (talk) 15:32, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
How do I check the animations, I'm guessing that you preview the course in BrawlBox? Also I have released v1.2 of Rugged Island so if your willing update the track for me (add animation & fix bugs) SitBar and I would be really grateful. Thanks for helping me, is there anything you need help with in return? --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 16:22, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
The best way to check animations is through NoClip. I can start working on the update now if you want. I don't need anything in return, just trying to help out. --👍 DryBowser (talk) 16:44, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Alright, I just updated the track. Animations should be all good now. --👍 DryBowser (talk) 17:28, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much for taking the time to update this track, I really appreciate the time and effort you put in. I've checked the video and it's all good. Could you explain what you mean by "The best way to check animations is through NoClip" as I have no idea what this is. Thanks --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 19:08, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Noclip is a website that allows you to view the course models. Here's the link. Just drag the szs for your track into there and it should show up. If it doesn't, either something is wrong with your track or something is wrong with noclip. It's generally the former, but sometimes NoClip fails to render things. --👍 DryBowser (talk) 19:50, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much! Noclip is amazing, this is so useful being able to preview the course before running it. You should edit the page Testing a Track and maybe the custom track tutorial and tell the community about this amazing tool. --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 12:09, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
@Man-O-Wii It's been a while but I was finally able to add lava and boostramp animations to my latest CT N64 Gothic Castle which I will release later this week. Thank you for your help, I actually found the wiki tutorial fine but I will probably edit it as the wording could be improved.--HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 16:43, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Updating Mario Tower Defense III

Hello, it's me again, I was wondering if it would be okay if I updated your track, Mario Tower Defense III, to include animations. --👍 DryBowser (talk) 01:46, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Sure, go ahead. I'm happy for you to update my tracks especially the older ones I made when I was a beginner as they all have no animation and are quite buggy. --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 08:16, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Trump

I have not recorded a video for this yet, but man is it cursed. Click here for pain. Whipinsnapper (talk) 17:05, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

You have made my day with this, I was testing Hypersonic kart wii (due to be released tonight or tomorrow) on my wii and I installed this and it is hilarious. When recording a video for this make sure to play Trump over the CT Make America Great Again😱. It's also really funny doing tricks with him, imagine Trump backflipping in real life! Overall you've done an excellent job with this, it is my favorite character texture from you! --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 17:31, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Track Edits

Can you make track edits only using SZS Modifier and BrawlBox? - XanderKartWii (talk) 07:56, 29 November 2020 (USA)

Not really, you can do Track Transformation which is very fun with just Wiimms SZS Tools. It depends what you want to do really. If you want to change the track model then you'll need a 3d tool but if you just want to add objects then you'll need a KMP editor. Try looking at the wiiki pages of some track edits to see what software other people used. --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 10:09, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

Custom Tracks

So I want to work on a project but have no idea how to make custom tracks. Do you think you could help me make the tracks? I have ideas for the tracks and stuff, just no idea how to make them. (P.S. can you also help me make a CT Distribution?) - XanderKartWii (talk) 03:12, 30 November 2020 (USA)

Year I can help. --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 08:56, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Great! So what should I do to make the model for the track if I only have SZS Modifier and BrawlBox? XanderKartWii (talk) 07:50, 30 November 2020 (USA)

The best way to learn is to either watch Rosalina speedruns tutorials which I would recommend or Snikis Tutorials as they will teach you from scratch. You will need more software than SZS Modifier and BrawlBox, Rosalina Speedruns first tutorial has a download link. If you don't want to/can't install software on you machine you should consider installing a virtual machine and running the software (except Sketchup) inside that, I would recommend using VirtualBox. When you start, make an extremely basic CT and get that working rather than making something really complex and then having it not work. If you need any help with something or if somethings not working just reply.--HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 15:42, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

I'm not aloud to get more software. Maybe you can make a model and I can get textures and stuff and we can both make really cool custom tracks. XanderKartWii (talk) 08:24, 30 November 2020 (USA)

I tend not to make custom tracks with people online any more as its too time consuming for me (I made Rugged Island with SitBar and it took forever) but I could help you make a CT distribution (you don't need any new software for that). --HackerCop ❯❯❯ Talk 17:20, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
Yes. Please help me make a CT Distribution. XanderKartWii (talk) 11:05, 1 December 2020
