I need to show you a lot of images, but I don't know where to show them all

Hey, I want to tell you something about your Brazilian Portuguese translation for MKW. However before I begin with that, I need to show you some images first. Problem is, I have a grant total of 87 images to show you (48 for the first set, 25 for the second set, 12 for the third set, and 2 for the fourth set). Where should I show them all? Forget what I just said! I successfully managed to upload the images into Imgur and split them into 4 different albums! Anyways, back to the actual talking. If I remember correctly, the way the position was displayed in the European Portuguese version of MK7 onwards was the same as the Spanish one, while on the fan translation here, it's the same as the Italian one, even in European Portuguese. I have some images to prove it, both on the in-game position and on the current race/battle. So, is this another way of writing your current position in Portuguese in the short form, or is it another European Portuguese VS Brazilian Portuguese difference? Oh, and I also have a minor question regarding the "GO!" and "FINISH!" texts. Are you sure they are written... correctly in both dialects (Why did I ask this...)? That's all. Below I have the albums that contain all the images that I want you to see. The first album contains the current number of each race, the second contains the current number of each battle, the third contains the in-game positions, and the fourth contains the "GO!" and "FINISH!" texts. All of them were taken from MK8D via using the capture button (it saves them on the SD Card by default if there's one and has enough space), and then taking of the SD Card and... the rest is history I suppose. This is a good question. According to the grammar websites, both forms are correct. But that form used with a dot (1.º) is more used in Portugal than Brazil. Interestingly, there are a Portuguese blog which pointed that the form without the dot is wrong. Well, that blog was wrong, because there aren't any dictionary registering the "correct" form, besides our best dictionaries write without the dots on the cover and the Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement, an official and legal instrument regulating the spelling of the language, signed by the representatives of the governments of all the Portuguese-speaking countries, was entirely written with ordinals without dots.

Now, speaking about "GO!" and "FINISH!" texts, I'm curious to know why do you thing they aren't spelled correctly. Let's check:

-- EU-PT --> "PARTIDA" can mean "game" (session), "match" and "start" on this context. It could be perfectly used for BR-PT too and to say "dar a partida" which can mean like "start the engine" but not literally.

-- BR-PT --> "LARGADA" also means "start", but just for the race or competition context, but we can consider this word a "brazilianism" for this exclusive meaning.

Hehe, thanks! That was NOT easy to accomplish! Because I don't know Portuguese, I decided to do the MAXIMUM number of races and battles possible in MK8D!!! It's 48 for races and 25 for battles (in the case of battles, it's exclusive to Random Battle; the standalone battle modes allow up to 24 battles)!!! The original MK8 also allowed for up to 32 battles, but I sold the original MK8 on MK8D's launch date, plus I don't have a capture card (for any console, not just for the Wii U), and the way of uploading Wii U images into a PC/laptop without a capture card is way too complicated for me, and I also have no plans on re-buying the game anytime soon (even on digital). And yeah, I didn't know what to write about the "GO!" and "FINISH!" texts... so yeah, that came randomly I suppose. On another note, I noticed that you wrote the "GO!" as "IR!" in Brazilian Portuguese instead of "LARGADA!". Keep it as it is, as it wouldn't really make any sence in Battle Mode (and possibly Time Trials), plus Mario Kart was never intended to be competitive, so yeah (at least that's just me). You can find the "GO!" text at the very end of the "Leaderboard Menus" section. Oh, and just so you know, since European Portuguese is a European dialect (hence the name), and since the 3DS and Wii U are both region-locked, this language is exclusive to the European version of the systems (just like British English, European French, German, European Spanish, Italian, Dutch, and Russian). EDIT: Shoot, I almost forgot to tell you something else: Which form should be used for each dialect? The one with the dot, the one without the dot, or both? Fortunately there is no more locking of the region on Switch, so we Brazilians can play at least Mario Kart 8 in Portuguese (since Nintendo stopped translating their games into Portuguese, probably because Portugal is almost dominated by the Sony market, which results in low sales for other consoles). I hope in the future Nintendo will start translating their games into Brazilian Portuguese, since lately they have given more signs of returning to our country (as a website for Brazil and Nintendo Store in Portuguese). But this will probably take some time because of the country's economic instability. I hope that at least Nintendo translates Mario Kart Tour into Brazilian Portuguese, which I think there is a possibility, because they already translated Super Mario Run and Miitomo for our variant, besides many Brazilians play mobile games. Now, back to the subject of the translation of Mario Kart Wii, I think I understood why you thought it wasn't correct, because this string is present in the menu of the Mario Kart Channel, which appears here: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/342678671506669568/488431896171380746/unknown.png

In that case, it would be totally bizarre to leave as a "LARGADA!", because this word can be used only for races. And for some reason there is only one "GO!" string on the CTGP page (as far as I know). If you know where's the another "GO!", it would help me a lot, because I coudn't find it.

Nah, I think they stopped translating their games into Portuguese because:

1) They still it's better to leave both dialects separate due to the many differences they have (just like Spanish where it is split into a European and an American dialect, and unlike English and French where they sometimes have only the most popular dialect),

2) They don't want to put Brazilian Portuguese on any console or handheld games yet (only on mobile phones, so it's possible that Mario Kart Tour will support Brazilian Portuguese),

And 3) Because the Switch is global, meaning that it's the exact same version in all regions. Same languages, same version, etc. They could make separate versions specifically for Brazil, but it would be mostly a waste of time and money for them.

And yes, I know that Miitomo and Super Mario Run both have Brazilian Portuguese, I've even noticed a few characters having different names in the Brazilian variant compared to the European variant. Back to the translation of the "GO!", ohhhhhhhhhhhh. Now I understand. It's specifically for the Mario Kart Channel! How did I come not think of that? You noticed its language selection right? Yes, you did, but did you notice something in the Spanish language? It only had one dialect (possibly European Spanish)! I thought they would have both a European and a Latin American dialect, but nope! It had just "Spanish"! Perhaps it's now clear why Nintendo no longer includes Portuguese in their new games and only on Wii U ports that had it! 1) Spanish and Portuguese are both very similar in written form, 2) People from Portugal (and Brazil?) prefer the original versions in movies, TV, etc. instead of dubbed ones.

So yeah, that's just my opinion on Nintendo's current situation with the Portuguese language as of this direct. I do remember seeing a few Brazilians on Miiverse playing the original MK8 in Spanish because there was no Portuguese in the American version. And yes, I really thought they would have both a European AND a Latin American dialect in this game for the Spanish language, but I was wrong. Perhaps they changed the rules for the Spanish translation so that it uses colloquialisms a lot less than before. Sarantis (talk) 21:11, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
