Overview
Super Mario Kart is the first game in the Mario Kart series from Nintendo. It was first released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992, and was the third bestselling title for the system. Super Mario Kart utilized Mode 7 graphics for its levels, while using sprites for characters and items. It is known for establishing many of the series' staples, such as battle mode, the use of Lakitu as a referee, and recurring locations such as Rainbow Road.
