Super Mario Kart is the first game in Nintendo's Mario Kart series. It was first released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992, and was the third bestselling game for the SNES. Super Mario Kart utilized Mode 7 graphics for its levels, while using sprites for characters and powerups and weapons, such as shells. It is known for establishing many of the series' staples, such as alternative gameplay systems featured in multiplayer battles, the use of Lakitu as a referee, and recurring locations such as Rainbow Road.

The game's entire track selection reappears in Mario Kart: Super Circuit as unlockable content.
