This is a quick and easy tutorial that will teach you how to play custom race tracks on Mario Kart Wii.

Introduction

So like many people, you're probably here because you want to play Custom Race Tracks on Mario Kart Wii, and you want the Home Brew Channel. This tutorial will teach you how to accomplish both.

First off, Nintendo does NOT approve of the use of the Home Brew Channel, nor do they approve the use of Custom Tracks. This may void your warranty. If you are unsure, do not proceed.

Second, you CAN NOT play Custom Tracks online in World Wide/Regional. You will end up with nothing but a black screen. You may ONLY play with friends who are using the same Custom Track Distribution. Doing otherwise may result in being permanently banned from Mario Kart Wii in online mode.

Third, if for some reason something doesn't work, don't get discouraged. If you have any confusion, please feel free to make an account & ask questions in the Talk Page.

Instaling The Home Brew Channel

The Home Brew Channel is a channel in which allows you to boot Home Brew apps from you Wii. One thing it can do, is launch Riivoultion. This section will give step by step instructions on how to install the Home Brew Channel.

Letter Bomb

Letter Bomb is currently the newest method of hacking your Wii. It's easy, fast, and will get it done with no hassle. This will only work for Wiis using Menu version 4.3 and that has Internet connectivity (Wi-Fi Or LAN Adapter).

What you'll need:

  • An SD Card
  • Hackmii Installer
  • A Wii connected to the Internet

On your Wii, go to the System Settings. Locate your Wii's friend code, and write it down. Go to Leter Bomb's Website.

From there, choose a region (Amearica/Europe/Asia). Enter in your Wii's friend code, and make sure your Wii is connected to the Internet.

Now, extract the Home Brew Channel data to your SD Card. Insert your SD Card into the Wii.

If you selected the proper region, and if you correctly entered your friend code, you should get a message on the Wii's message board that looks like a letter with a Bomb in it.

With your SD Card in, and the "Letter Bomb" in place, simply select the Letter with the bomb on it and get ready for the Home Brew Channel to be installed onto your Wii.

Banner Bomb is an out-of-date method for Hacking your Wii that works on the Wii's System Menu 4.0-4.2.

What you'll need:

  • An SD Card
  • Hackmii Installer
  • Banner Bomb Data

It works in a manner close to Letter Bomb, except no Wi-Fi is needed, and it will only operate on System Menu 4.0-4.2.

First, extract the Home Braw Channel data to your SD Card. Do the same with the Banner Bomb data.

Now go to the SD Card Menu, and there should be a blank channel.

Select it, and the installation should boot.

Downgrading

Downgrading is a method of bringing your Wii from System Menu 4.3 to 4.0-4.2 for use with Banner Bomb.

Downgrading is not recommended and will brick your Wii (Brick means your Wii will no longer work, and your Wii will be as useful as a brick).

Riivolution

Riivolution is a Home Brew app/Channel that tricks your Wii into loading files from an SD Card. This is what allows you to play Custom Tracks. This section will teach you how to install Riivoultion.

Using The Home Brew Channel

If you already have the Home Brew Channel, than this should be easy.

What you'll need:

  • Riivolution Data Hint: Try HERE

OR

  • Home Brew Browser Hint: Try HERE

If you choose Riivoultion data, all you have to do is download the Riivoultion Data (Link above), and put it on your SD Card (Must be on the root of your SD Card like always).

Then you put it into your Wii, launch the Home Brew Channel, and you can use it.

You will also be given the option to download the Riivoultion Channel.

If you choose Home Brew Browser (Download link above), than all you have to is put it on the root of your SD Card. (Wi-Fi Needed to use the Home Brew Browser).

Put the SD Card into your Wii, and launch the Home Brew Channel. Press the "Home Brew Browser", & wait for it to connect.

Once connected, locate Applications, and find Riivoultion & download.

Installing The Riivolution Channel

To install the Riivoltion channel, use the methods above to install the Home Brew Channel.

Playing Custom Tracks

This section will teach you how to play Custom Tracks, assuming you have Riivolution (See above sections on how to download).

Computer Setup

Now that you have Riivouluiton, you can now play Custom Tracks.

In order to get the proper data you need to play custom tracks, see Custom Track Distributions. Once you've downloaded a Riivolution Custom Track Distribution, proceed to the following.

Extract the data you've downloaded to your SD Card.

Check the "Riivoulution" folder to see if the extracted files are there.

There should also be, for example, a new folder named "MKWII", which Riivoulution will read custom track data from.

On The Wii

Now that you have some custom track data on your SD Card, insert it into your Wii's SD Card slot.

Launch Riivoulution.

You should get a screen with some features you can enable/disable/change. If launching from the Home Brew Channel, you may be asked to install the Riivolution channel as well.

When you're ready, press launch, and the custom track data will be loaded.

In Game

Now that the custom track data haa been loaded, you may notice a few changes.

Some Custom Track Distributions may use new title screens or music. Some may use new images, courses, characters, and ECT.

Mostly everything as far as controls & menu options should be in the same place.

Some Custom Track Distributions l CTGP Revolution use "Extra Course Slots" which adds more than the original 32 courses available when playing normally.

From here, you can play any custom track that has been included in that distribution.

Helpful Tips

Here's a list of helpful tips they may be useful:

  • ALWAYS use non-SDHC Cards to install Channels
  • NEVER use offical Nintendo SD Cards
  • When using Riivolution, do not eject the SD Card
  • Usually when the Home Brew Channel is present on a Wii, as the Wii's turned on there will be a green flash (There is nothing wrong with this)
  • NEVER Update your Wii Menu unless there is an update for the Home Brew Channel to work with the new System Menu
